Maintaining everyday foot care is essential in keeping the feet healthy. It is helpful to measure children’s feet frequently, as this will help in determining what the correct size shoe your child needs. As the feet grow, it is beneficial to wear shoes that have adequate room for the toes to move freely in. This can help to prevent uncomfortable foot conditions from developing which may include bunions and hammertoes. If there are existing medical conditions such as diabetes, it is important to be aware of any cuts, scrapes, or bruises that may be on the feet. Additionally, when the toenails are trimmed, cutting them in a straight line can possibly prevent ingrown toenails from developing. If you would like additional information about the importance of daily foot care, please consult with a podiatrist.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

Gout is a painful foot condition, and is considered to be a form of arthritis. It occurs as a result of excess uric acid levels in the blood, and may be caused by eating foods that have high purine levels. Psoriasis is a skin condition which may cause psoriatic arthritis, and the joints, tendons, and ligaments are often impacted. If you are experiencing pain in your feet, it is necessary to receive prompt and effective treatment. Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a joint disorder that involves the inflammation of different joints in your body, such as those in your feet. Arthritis is often caused by a degenerative joint disease and causes mild to severe pain in all affected areas. In addition to this, swelling and stiffness in the affected joints can also be a common symptom of arthritis.

In many cases, wearing ill-fitting shoes can worsen the effects and pain of arthritis. Wearing shoes that have a lower heel and extra room can help your feet feel more comfortable. In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, the arch in your foot may become problematic. Buying shoes with proper arch support that contour to your feet can help immensely.

Alleviating Arthritic Pain

  • Exercises that stretch the foot can prevent further pain and injury and increase mobility
  • Most of the pain can be alleviated with anti-inflammatory drugs, heat, and topical medications
  • Massages can help temporarily alleviate pain.

It is best to see your doctor for the treatment that is right for your needs and symptoms. Conditions vary, and a podiatrist can help you determine the right method of care for your feet.

Inflammation of the Tarsal Tunnel

There is a nerve which is located behind the bone that protrudes on the inside of the ankle. This is referred to as the tibial nerve which runs under a band of tissue that forms a tunnel. Tarsal tunnel syndrome can take place when inflammation occurs to the surrounding tissue, and this ailment typically causes pain and discomfort. Common symptoms that are associated with this condition may include a dull pain in the bottom of the foot, and patients may feel a burning or tingling sensation. If you are afflicted with tarsal tunnel syndrome, it is strongly suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can advise you on treatment options that are best for you.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome, which can also be called tibial nerve dysfunction, is an uncommon condition of misfiring peripheral nerves in the foot. The tibial nerve is the peripheral nerve in the leg responsible for sensation and movement of the foot and calf muscles. In tarsal tunnel syndrome, the tibial nerve is damaged, causing problems with movement and feeling in the foot of the affected leg.

Common Cause of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Involves pressure or an injury, direct pressure on the tibial nerve for an extended period of time, sometimes caused by other body structures close by or near the knee.
  • Diseases that damage nerves, including diabetes, may cause tarsal tunnel syndrome.
  • At times, tarsal tunnel syndrome can appear without an obvious cause in some cases.

The Effects of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Different sensations, an afflicted person may experience pain, tingling, burning or other unusual sensations in the foot of the affected leg.
  • The foot muscles, toes and ankle become weaker, and curling your toes or flexing your foot can become difficult.
  • If condition worsens, infections and ulcers may develop on the foot that is experiencing the syndrome.

A physical exam of the leg can help identify the presence of tarsal tunnel syndrome. Medical tests, such as a nerve biopsy, are also used to diagnose the condition. Patients may receive physical therapy and prescriptive medication. In extreme cases, some may require surgery.

Common Symptoms of Corns

If you have noticed a thickened layer of skin, often appearing in a small, ball-like shape, you may have developed a foot condition known as a corn. Corns generally form due to excess pressure put on the soles of the feet, and are known to be recurring if not properly treated. Corns are generally sore to the touch and may become increasingly more painful overtime. To help treat this condition, it may be beneficial to wear corn caps, have cryosurgery performed, or wear shoe inserts for extra support and cushion. Some patients have found soaking their feet in warm water followed by filing their corn with a pumice stone to be helpful in relieving discomfort. To determine which treatment option is best for you, and to prevent corns from recurring, it’s suggested you consult with your local podiatrist.

Corns can make walking very painful and should be treated immediately. If you have questions regarding your feet and ankles, contact Dr. Tupper of Coshocton Foot Health Center. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Corns: What Are They? And How Do You Get Rid of Them?
Corns are thickened areas on the skin that can become painful. They are caused by excessive pressure and friction on the skin. Corns press into the deeper layers of the skin and are usually round in shape.

Ways to Prevent Corns
There are many ways to get rid of painful corns such as:

  • Wearing properly fitting shoes that have been measured by a professional
  • Wearing shoes that are not sharply pointed or have high heels
  • Wearing only shoes that offer support

Treating Corns

Although most corns slowly disappear when the friction or pressure stops, this isn’t always the case. Consult with your podiatrist to determine the best treatment option for your case of corns.
